The difference between Parfum, EDT, EDP, EDC and Eau Fraiche is related to the concentration of perfume essential oils. The more concentrated a perfume is, the more it will last on your skin and typically more expensive to buy.
Perfume (Parfum)
It is the strongest fragrance available. Also known as Extrait de Parfum or pure perfume consists of a 15-40% concentration of perfume essence however concentration is generally between 20% to 30% for most parfums. This means that not only do you need to use less, but also that the fragrance lasts longer, typically for up to 6 to 8 hours, depending on skin type. People with sensitive skin may do better with parfums as they have far less alcohol than other fragrance types and therefore are not as likely to dry out the skin.
EDP (Eau de Parfum)
It is lighter than Perfume, with an 15-20% concentration, but still has long lasting characteristics, from 4 to 5 hours. It is less expensive than pure perfume. Eau de Parfum is one of the most common fragrance types and is suitable for everyday wear. I like my fragrances to be bold and last so I will buy EDP or above. I find that if I buy an EDT, I have to spray too often and typically will only last me 2 to 3 weeks per bottle.
EDT (Eau de Toilette)
It is lighter than EDP, with a 5-15% concentration of the essence. It usually lasts for 2 to 4 hours. It is cheaper than Eau de Parfum and is one of the most popular types of fragrance available. Eau de Toilette is considered by some to be for day wear while Eau de Parfum is considered night wear.
EDC (Eau De Cologne)
It is lighter than EDT, often referred to just as Cologne and has the greatest dilution of fragrances with a 2-6% concentration of perfume essence. It usually lasts for 2 hours. EDC generally comes in larger bottles and more of the fragrance needs to be used.
Eau Fraiche
Eau Fraiche on the other hand will last for the shortest duration. It usually lasts for 1 to 2 hours. While Eau Fraiche has a low fragrance concentration, it does not contain a high amount of alcohol. Along with the fragrance, the remainder of Eau Fraiche is mostly water.
The Difference Between Parfum, EDP, EDT, EDC & Eau Fraiche
Along with the types of perfume listed above, there are mists, aftershaves, and other types of fragrances available.
Higher end fragrances can cost a significant amount of money so doing research beforehand will ensure that you get the type of fragrance you are looking for but I find they last so much longer because I use less. Along with fragrance types there are also fragrance notes which determine the final scent. With all of the types and scents available, shopping for perfume is not always easy but I really enjoy it and find it a lot of fun!

Thank you for your comment and question. The higher the concentration of perfume essence the longer the perfume will last. Opt for an EDP or pure perfume if your budget will allow. Thank you, Christina. x

Hi Fervel, which perfume are you referring to? The one from Kenzo or Dior? And what is it that you would like to know? Thank you for your question. Christina. x
It all depends on preference. I wear EDP from morning to night… but I like you to smell me (in a good way) before you see me. Thanks for the message. Christina. x
