For those of you, that do not read Greek. This is the translation. I would like to say a big thank you to Christina Christoforou and Ygeia Watch for the interview.

Antioxidants help protect the skin surface and repair it from environmental aggressors such as free radicals, UV rays, and pollution. When we introduce antioxidants into our skincare routine, our skin looks more beautiful, but also healthier.

Christina Maria Kyriakidou, a recognized and award-winning beauty journalist in the United Kingdom, in an interview with YgeiaWatch, informs us about the benefits of antioxidants for the face and reveals her secrets.

What are the main antioxidants and what benefits do they have to offer to the facial skin?

Retinol

Retinol is one of the most well-known skincare ingredients on the market. An over-the-counter version of retinoids, retinols, are derivatives of vitamin A that are mainly used to treat and prevent aging and acne. Retinol, according to the expert, is best avoided during the summer months, as it can make the skin more sensitive to the sun’s rays. Retinol and vitamin A-based preparations should not be used during pregnancy.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for breaking down skin collagen, resulting in skin imperfections such as wrinkles, dark spots, fine lines, and loose skin. Vitamin C also promotes collagen production. Ascorbic acid is the strongest form of vitamin C, it is the most stable and effective form in skincare.

Vitamin C antioxidants can help protect the skin from the dangers posed by the sun’s ultraviolet rays. But this does not mean that we use a skin serum with vitamin C instead of sunscreen. It can not replace the SPF as it does not absorb UVA or UVB rays. However, if ultraviolet light enters the skin, some research shows that vitamin C can reverse its effects on the skin.

In addition to retinol and vitamin C, there are other equally important antioxidants for the skin, says Ms. Kyriakidou.

Niacinamide (B3)

Niacinamide is a powerful antioxidant that improves the texture and tone of the skin.

Resveratrol

It is part of a group of compounds called polyphenols. They are believed to act as antioxidants, protecting the body from damage.

Vitamin E

It is a powerful antioxidant that can be effective in reducing UV damage to the skin.

Coenzyme Q10

Helps protect the skin at the molecular level from the harmful effects of the sun and free radicals.

Polyphenols

Polyphenols have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and can help repair and protect a variety of skin disorders caused by overexposure to ultraviolet light.

Antioxidants – For Health & Beauty: What is the right age to introduce antioxidants?

According to the beauty expert, from the age of 18, it is the perfect time to introduce antioxidants into the skincare routine.

“This is a good time to start protecting your skin cells from environmental attacks,” she said.

She adds that a mild no-sting serum of vitamin C is extremely effective when used before the application of daily sunscreen. It will help neutralize free radicals that break down collagen, damage cells and cause discoloration.

If you are looking for an advanced skincare routine, then it may be best to visit a dermatologist or consult your beautician to suggest what is best for you. There are many companies in the market that offer antioxidants at different prices, she says.

When do we realize that our skin needs antioxidants?

It is best to start introducing antioxidants into your routine before you see any skin discoloration, blemishes, lines, and wrinkles. However, antioxidants can be added at any time in the skincare routine and make a visible difference in the skin. Antioxidants are not the only ones that can be applied topically to the skin. Our skin on the outside is a reflection of what is happening inside the body. The introduction of antioxidants in our diet as part of overall health gives us what we are looking for – health and beauty inside and out.

Antioxidants – For Health & Beauty: Can we combine antioxidants?

Antioxidants - For Health & Beauty Secrets in Beauty Christina Maria Kyriakidou

According to the expert, we can combine antioxidants, but research must precede to know what we are going to put on our face. “For example, do not mix vitamin C with niacinamide. They are not compatible. But, you can combine vitamin C & vitamin E together – and with/without ferulic acid. “These three together are a very powerful combination of antioxidants!”.

Some personal recommendations from me:

  • SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum
  • SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense Serum
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios AOX Daily Antioxidant Serum
  • Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum
  • Medik8 C-TETRA Lipid Vitamin C Radiance Serum
  • Dr. Barbara Strum Anti-Pollution Drops

Antioxidants and other skincare products

Ms. Kyriakidou states that any serum on the skin should be followed by a moisturiser and sun protection.

Moisturising, as well as sunscreen, are essential for the skin; they will help enhance the action of the antioxidants and protect the skin from any future damage.
