Keep Blonde Hair Blonde

How to Keep Blonde Hair for Longer

I love being a faux-blonde but caring for my blonde hair takes a lot of work and hair treatment dedication. Not only can natural elements (such as water, the sun, and air pollution) make my hair brassy, but over styling and processing your hair can make hair dry and prone to breakage.

Here are my tips on how to keep blonde hair blonde!

Switch to a Shampoo for Blonde Hair

To brighten blonde hair, we need a brightening shampoo to gently remove dark, dull build-up and reveal natural-looking blonde with a full spectrum of tones.

Shampoos remove natural oils and strip hair of its pigment, so it’s a simple fact that the more often we wash our blonde hair, the quicker it will fade. In between washes, iI like to use a dry shampoo on the days when I don’t wash my hair.

I will only wash my blonde hair twice per week on average and I alternate between my brightening shampoo and hydrating shampoo to protect my hair on both levels.

Avoid Rinsing with Hot Water

Hot water opens up the hair cuticle and makes our colour fade fast. Coldwater, on the other hand, does just the opposite—it seals the cuticle, which helps preserve color while adding softness and shine. I use cold water when it’s time to rinse out my conditioner for this very reason.

Deep Conditioning Treatments

All coloured hair needs lots of moisture and protection, use a deep conditioning treatment once a week. Deep-acting conditioners moisturise the scalp and hair, help repair damage, and prevent breakage. This treatment will also restore shine and keep our colour looking fresh and beautiful.

I would also suggest alternating your at-home deep conditional treatments. I will typically use my Philip Kingsley Elasticizer as my strength treatment and my Tweak’d by Nature Restore Cleansing Hair Treatment for hydration.

Use a Good Quality Hair Oil

A high-quality clear oil is needed for blonde hair. I would not recommend a coloured oil like argan (which can be tinged yellow and stain bleached hair) or coconut oil (which has a hard time penetrating the follicle), instead opt for Marula oil.

Marula Oil has the unique capability of penetrating deep into the hair’s cuticle for ultimate healing and repair. I like to use two to three drops of Marula oil through my damp ends before styling.

My first choice here is from The Ordinary and it is their 100% Cold-Pressed Virgin Marula Oil. It is 100% pure, cold-pressed, and organic, this formulation provides the unmitigated power of a natural wonder: virgin marula oil. Rich in fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants, this luxurious, multitasking miracle oil hydrates skin, restoring a radiant tone, as well as moisturising hair for a silky-soft result.

I am also a big fan of the Shu Uemura Art of Hair Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil. This is another clear oil. It uses Camellia Oil as its base which is very rich in essential lipids and is one of the most rapidly absorbed oils. To find out more, click here.

Protect Blonde Hair from the Sun

The sun’s harmful UV rays don’t just damage the skin., they also take a toll on our hair colour, in particularly if it’s blonde. It is really important that we protect our blonde hair with a sun hat or baseball cap and apply protective spray to prevent sun damage.
