I love a monochromatic makeup look and I am thrilled that the monochromatic makeup trends again in 2022. What makes this trend so universal is that it can be as soft, as it can be bold, and suits all skin tones.

What is Monochromatic Makeup?

Monochromatic makeup involves applying the same colour (and often the same product) to multiple areas of the face so that the lips, cheeks, and eyes match. The result, which you might think would fall flat, looks balanced and effortless.

When you find the right products to create this look, it is an easy makeup look to create, and a sophisticated one. It has a certain je ne sais quoi that creates such a chic finish.

Monochromatic makeup can range from soft to bold, and subtle to bright. Depending on the product used and any mixing beforehand, the depth of colour can be adapted to create the desired effect on eyes, cheeks, and lips.

If you are familiar with makeup artist Patrick Ta, you will know that he is well-known for his monochromatic looks.

Why is Monochromatic Makeup Popular?

Speed and multitasking products is why monochromatic makeup is so popular with professional makeup artists especially for red-carpet events.

For events like these, speed is everything and sometimes you don’t always know who you will be assisting or working on. Think how many products we would need to carry to cope with all skin tones and textures.

This does not mean that every look is the same. To create dimension and interest, I like to play with texture – matte, metallic, frost, glitter, gloss, foil, cream – and I tend to be pulled into the direction of the wonderful, and talented Danessa Myricks.

Key Monochromatic Looks for 2022

Romantic Pink

Pink is the heart of monochromatic makeup. It can be any shade of pink and creates a soft romantic look that is glamorous and fun.

For this look, a popular choice is the Dior Backstage Rosy Glow Blush that Kylie Jenner brought into the limelight. The shade pink is a true, traditional pink that gives a beautiful and bright pink flush. It is often out of stock but if you can get your hands on it, it is a very good choice.

A staple alternative for me is Danessa Myricks Colorfix.

Sunkissed Coral

Peach makeup is very minimalistic and natural. It’s a perfectly flushed, summer-inspired look. It brings back memories of sun-kissed noses and creamsicles. It’s the perfect type of monochromatic look for the girls who like something more subdued and subtle.

The base of this look is going to be the Nars Liquid Blush in the shade Torrid which is a warm coral with golden shimmer. This blush was originally made popular by Madison Beer who swore by the shade Orgasm which is an orange-based pinky shade.

Soft Bronze

90’s makeup has been coming back. Brown lipstick, smoky eyes, and lots of same-toned glitters. Using the same tones of browns or sticking to rich chocolate tones will help you achieve that monochrome 90’s glam.

Where to Shop for Monochromatic Makeup Looks?

MAC Cosmetics

This season, there is an undeniable return to the monochromatic colour palette makeup trend. MAC has really focused on this look over the past years and this year is no exception. MAC has launched #MACTHEARTOFCOLOR looks and five colour palettes:

  • Nude – #whippedcoffee
  • Coral – #apricotjelly
  • Red – #hautechili
  • Pink – #powerpink
  • Purple – #juicyplum

Danessa Myricks

Due to the heat and the fact that Cyprus, I used Danessa Myricks as much as I can and certainly as my base especially her Colorfix range. The more I try from Danessa, the more I love, and the more I want more in my personal and professional makeup kit.

If you are looking for budge-proof, sweat-proof, and extreme long-wearing makeup, then look no further than Danessa Myricks Colorfix which come in various finishes.

My ‘Romantic Pink’ look above was done using Danessa Myricks Colorfix Matte in Latte, and the exact same product and colour was used on eyes, cheeks, and lips.

My ‘Soft Bronze’ was done using Danessa Myricks Colorfix, I used Gingerbread as the base which is a warm medium brown and then used the Too Faced Cinnamon Swirl Eyeshadow Palette on top.

Hindash Beautopsy Palette

The Beautopsy Palette from Hindash is pressed pigment, colours are in gradients, vegan, and these multi-use shades can be used as an eyeshadow, blush, contour, highlight, eyeliner, and brow product.

My only issue at the moment with Hindash products is that I cannot get hold of them. I keep hoping that a makeup job will come up in Dubai so I can stock up!
